Chiang Mai - Pai

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s northern capital and former seat of the Lanna Kingdom.  Surrounded by lush countryside it is a land of misty mountains and colourful hill tribes. It is also an amazing place for ethical elephant sanctuaries where visits in small groups are organised. When you arrive at any sanctuary, the guides will give you a basic overview of the tour, some information about the elephants and then traditional Karen clothes to wear. Throughout your visit, you will be feeding, bathing and even playing with the elephants; an amazing experience to live.

One must visit is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, also known as Doi Suthep. It is one of the most historically and spiritually significant places in Thailand and is an impressive embodiment of the Lanna culture, with its origins dating back almost 700 years. This sacred temple sits approximately 15 kilometres  outside of the city centre. Once you arrive, you will have to climb the 309 steps of the mythical Naga serpent stairs to reach the temple and enjoy breathtaking views of the city below.

Another main attraction is Hang Dong Quarry, also known as the Chiang Mai Grand Canyon, located roughly 45 minutes from the city centre. Definitely not comparable with its American counterpart, the Chiang Mai Grand Canyon is a former quarry turned into a beautiful location for a day out. If you're lucky, you will be there during an upcoming event like Dreamscape, making it a great opportunity to enjoy both landscape and music.

Finally Pai is a small town close to the Myanmar border in Mae Hong Son Province, northwest of Chiang Mai. Tucked deep in a valley, surrounded by walls of endless mountains, it is made popular by its untouched nature, convivial bars and vibrant night market.  With picturesque landscapes, many people are coming to Pai simply to slow down. Artsy types often haunt Pai’s many café galleries, while others prefer to lounge away on the riverside or at a chilled-out bar.
