Don Det (Si Pha Don) - 4000 islands
From Siem Reap in Cambodia, my boyfriend and I took a minivan for about 8hours to cross the boarder and enter the south of Laos. We started our unpredictable long stay in Laos in Don Det or Si Phan Don that literally means “4,000 Islands” in the Lao language. Some of them are no bigger than a large rock while others offer a paradise getaway in the Mekong River.
Chilled out vibes, cheap accommodation, gorgeous scenery at dawn, many bars over the Mekong, stunning waterfall and very peaceful environment are what you can expect.
I had the chance to observe Liphi waterfall located on Don Khone (accessible by a bridge), a collection of powerful falls spilling down along a branch of the Mekong river. To get there you can easily rent a bicycle for a day; it is also the perfect way to explore the island.
